Hitting Your Goals...

There is a significant difference between those who just have dreams and those who achieve them. There is no better time than right now to figure out what you want your life to look like and make a plan. Get started on your future self with these five keys to successful goal setting.

Is your goal SMART? A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time bound. If your goal hits these 5 points, it is SMART. If it doesn’t hit these 5 points, how can you adjust it so it does? Setting a SMART goal is necessary because it allows you to have a clear focus and increase your chances of achieving your dream.

Get motivated. This may seem obvious, but setting a goal that motivates you is key. Set goals that are relevant to you and will bring you value once you achieve them. Your goals should be all about you, make sure they are important and meaningful!

Set stepping stone goals. You may have a few big goals on your list, but in order to achieve these big goals, you will need some support. That’s where stepping stone goals come into play. Begin by breaking down your larger, overarching goal into smaller, tangible goals, or stepping stone goals. To create your stepping stone goals, think about what smaller milestones you need to accomplish in order to reach your main goal.

Write ‘em down. Start by writing down all of your goals, your big picture goals and the stepping stones that fall beneath them. Use positive language when forming these goals. For example, instead of writing “don’t make this mistake”, rephrase as “perform this well.” Use direct, confident language, such as “I will do this,” instead of “I want to” or “I wish.”

Create a solid plan. Once your goals are written down, it’s time to make a game plan for each one. Be specific in your plan and answer a few important questions. • What is the order in which you need to achieve your stepping stone goals? • What will you do when you experience an issue? • Who can you turn to for help or assistance? • What is the timeline in which you want to accomplish this goal? • How will you stay on track?

Once your plan is formed, make multiple copies and keep them in different places for daily reminders.

With each of these tips, you will create a solid foundation to start working on your goals. It’s time to put your plan into action and start making your dreams your reality.
